Sculpture Exhibition

Spirit-dwelling Girls with Empty Shell

Greetings from Gallery Hanakagesho

With society on hold because of the coronavirus, Nagashima Shinya’s 2020 solo exhibition, for the safety of visitors, the artist, and people around them, will not be held at the Nezu Gallery but online.

This special exhibition page has been set up so that the charm of Nagashima Shinya’s art world can fully be appreciated without the need for many people to come to the gallery.

Mysteriously, the theme of the works that Nagashima created and prepared is protective charms filled with people’s prayers and thoughts. I think people are in various environments but the artist hopes that many will enjoy the exhibition.

Greetings from Shinya NAGASHIMA

Up to now I have constantly searched for what I wanted to create. In my heart there was always a desire for it to be my essential self. That challenge has been my focus of recent years.

What have I come to create? I have come to create protective charms that can be worn and filled with a person’s prayers and wishes.

The “kara” of the exhibition title means “empty” and “a shell”. As a container, it is a “yorishiro(依代)” – an object that houses spirits – and it is the owner who fills it. Netsuke, as lucky items, are strong in the elements of protective charms.

In this exhibition, each motif is one that can accept prayers and wishes. In these new works, the elements of protective charms are strongly highlighted. Please enjoy, as “yorishiro(依代)”, the works I created.
