Greetings
from Gallery Hanakagesho
We are excited to hold Nakakaji Mabu’s first solo exhibition.
Many will be surprised to hear that it will be his first!
Since completing college studies in 2010, Mabu has been steadily active as an artist. We hope his first solo exhibition will signal a major breakthrough.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, we ask those who would like to visit the gallery to make a reservation. We apologize for the inconvenience, but along with the artist, we will be grateful for your understanding.
The artist’s new works and interview may be seen on our special online site. We will be thrilled if many enjoy the exhibition.
Greetings from the artist
It is my feeling that moonlit animals in the darkness of the night appear differently during the day.
For this exhibition, I have aimed to produce work that would give viewers a sense of the environment and atmosphere surrounding the animals at night.
As a new carving challenge, I used stabilized wood, a material used infrequently in netsuke carving. I had chosen the original wood for its texture and color, but since it has become available as a material from which artwork can be produced, it has become possible to seek new possibilities for future works.
This is my first solo exhibition. As I was carving the exhibition works, I recalled the things that had been important to me to date, and felt the results of having persevered.
As a measure against the pandemic, please make an appointment if you wish to see the works in person at the gallery in Nezu. The works will also be shown online. We would be thrilled if everyone is able to enjoy the exhibition.
