Mabu NAKAKAJI is an artist who creates stylish netsuke with delicate handwork.
He has also found good synergy between jewelry work and netsuke carving.
Behind his simple and beautiful carving is poetic sentiment. Beauty and poetry cannot be expressed in numbers or theory, but Mabu is an artist who creates work that speaks of sensitivity and the inner being.
In the competitive trend for detail and impact, I believe the pursuit of refined beauty will leave a lasting impression.
After graduating from a jewelry college, Mabu initially studied netsuke by himself. However, in 2016 he became part of a two-artist exhibition with Bishu SAITO at Mitsukoshi Department Store in Nihonbashi, receiving instruction from Bishu san for approximately ten months. This greatly improved his sculptural ability. As a result, Bishu san’s theory of sculpture and Mabu’s mastery of the fundamentals are well reflected in the work.
I believe that Mabu has the potential to become an important contemporary netsuke artist who creates work with beautiful forms.
