What is Netsuke?

Are you familiar with “netsuke”?

In old Japan, a netsuke was a small device used to prevent a pillbox, bag, or tobacco pouch from slipping off the sash of a kimono worn by a samurai or townsperson. In the age of pocket-less kimonos, the netsuke was attached to the container or pouch by a short cord and slid up between the kimono and sash to act as a stopper, allowing the individual to carry small or valuable items. A netsuke was thus a practical item, but with an increasing emphasis on craftsmanship and sculpture, it also became a gentleman’s fashion accessory, with witty motifs and designs complementing the container or pouch an added diversion. From practical origins, netsuke developed rapidly, and examples eventually reached the realm of fine art. Palm-sized with aesthetic sense and fine craftsmanship, a netsuke was not only a practical item, but also a work of art to be admired.

As a practical accessory, a netsuke’s size and form are necessarily restricted. There must also be holes to thread a cord. As a work of art, it must be observable from above and below, front and behind, and from any angle. A netsuke perhaps differs from other small sculpture in that it is best appreciated in the palm of the hand. Within these restrictions, artists create their unique works. Japan’s ingenuity for miniaturization has been acclaimed since ancient times and herein is part of the appeal of netsuke since the Edo Period.

Nowadays, when the word “netsuke” is heard, many people think immediately of trinkets on the end of mobile phone straps or straps sold at temples. Certainly, a small object is attached at the end of a strap, not unlike netsuke, but since mobile phone or temple straps do not function to counterweight something hung from a kimono sash, they are somewhat different. Despite this, small decorative mobile phone straps that initially had little use have become larger and can be used to pull mobile phones out of pockets or bags. With this in mind, even trinket straps are continually evolving.

Small netsuke like objects used to prevent items slipping off the sash of a kimono certainly came into being long ago. But with the increasing popularity of western dress, the combination of kimono, sash, and netsuke went into decline. The objects, however, continued to be called netsuke even after losing their practical purpose.

In daily life, an affinity for small objects has been a trait of Japanese people for a very long time. People who grow bonsai trees, those who collect free gifts accompanying sweets, and individuals who carry jangling collections of trinkets or other items all seem to share this common underlying affinity. Netsuke is also thought to have stemmed from it.

Material
Example materials used for netsuke include wood (boxwood, ebony, cypress, cherry blossom tree, yew, other), animal* (elephant tusk, deer antler, mammoth tusk, pig tusk, water buffalo horn, other), porcelain, metal, glass, and acrylic resin. Motifs are also unlimited and include animals, monsters, myths, legendary figures, and contemporary sculpture. To artists and enthusiasts, the subject matter is of keen interest; however, it is also thought that works reflecting the current times or enhancing traditional netsuke will continue to be produced. Whether in pursuit of the new or the continuation of tradition, the work of various artists will ensure the enrichment of the netsuke world.

Netsuke History
The period from 1804 to 1830 saw netsuke at its zenith as a practical accessory and loved by many regardless of social standing. Its importance, however, declined over the Meiji Period (1868-1912) as the kimono gave way to western dress. Unexpectedly however, netsuke became an eye-stopper for European and American visitors after the country ended its isolation. The Meiji government began encouraging the export of netsuke as artwork and it became a sought after item for art collectors. Today there are many non-Japanese enthusiasts and many fine collections of netsuke held in art museums around the world. But despite the high appraisal of netsuke abroad, the level of awareness in Japan continues to be low.

During the 1970s, the netsuke world saw a new movement. A group of enthusiasts and artists began carving netsuke as contemporary art, ushering in the era of contemporary netsuke. This new movement expanded the possibilities of netsuke materials and motif designs, and created an exciting challenge for new themes and materials that continues to this day.

Netsuke today
It is quite possible that many people wonder, “Netsuke carvers? Are they even around today? ” Netsuke can generally be divided into two types: antique and contemporary. Most people probably imagine the antique netsuke made during the Edo Period. Today, there are many contemporary artists who become fascinated with the world of netsuke and begin making their own netsuke. Although few, there are also lineages of netsuke artisans from the Edo Period who faithfully continue the tradition. In addition, there are many non-Japanese netsuke artists. Throughout the world there are probably more than a hundred artists, and they engage in creating netsuke every day.

One wonders how netsuke was perceived in the daily lives of people in its heyday during the Edo Period. Today there are no comparable devices, however, as a daily necessity, fashionable, and wide-ranging in price, today’s wristwatch is perhaps the closest (?) Wristwatches vary widely, from being very expensive – those designed by famous designers, regarded as rare and valuable, or made by master craftsmen – to being simple and very cheap. From those that only need to tell the time to those that must be fashionably cool – within which are examples like expensive jewelry –, there are also various uses. Could netsuke have been like this during the Edo Period? It can be imagined that there were various demands for various netsuke.

Even in the age of mostly western fashion, the number of enthusiasts who enjoy netsuke as a device and accessory is gradually increasing. Netsuke is not obsolete, but an enjoyable part of modern life. Whether a device or accessory, netsuke is alive and well, and is highly recommended.

At the same time, the possibilities of netsuke as artwork are continuously expanding. Regardless of what a netsuke artist believes, it may be thought that contemporary netsuke is inseparable from the contemporary art world as it is made and shown in contemporary society. From netsuke, the evolution of a new kind of art is thus a possibility in the future.

Like the wristwatch, netsuke has various manifestations of netsuke, but it hoped that their evolution continues.
