Aya Akiba studied glass sculpture at Tama Art University. With this background, she produces artwork based on personally witnessed landscapes and recollections.
Akiba incorporates her impressions and perceptions into glass, and turns them into artwork. With techniques such as core glass and an originally developed burner-work technique, her artwork includes decorative and lidded containers.
Akiba’s works, which are small and can be held in the palm of the hand, elicit nostalgia and a feeling of excitement. They recall the abundant recollections of childhood excitement.
I think Akiba has a talent for noticing insignificant detail in everyday life. Her eye is attracted to, for example, thrown-away items and small animals on the side of the road. I often hear stories that she saved small animals such as sparrows and snails. From these experiences, I hope everyone can enjoy the magnified fantasy and wonderful originality of Akiba’s work.
Aya Akiba currently works as a glass artist from her home studio. She has held an annual solo exhibition since 2006 and also takes part in various group and special exhibitions.
