I create artwork in the medium of glass. I try to make works of delightful moments that I felt or found, or that are even modest, in my daily life.
With transparent and opaque glass, the differences in the look and form of, for example, water and bird feathers can be created. Colors can be layered, mixed, and diluted like watercolor. With glass I feel there more and more possibilities each day.
I create small works that can be held in the palm of the hand but my thoughts are on trying to capture a precious moment in time and space.
Aya Akiba
This work was produced last year, but my first encounter with Aya’s art was with an example of the same design. I think it was 2006. I did not know Aya at the time, but when I saw a postcard for her exhibition, I wanted to know more! I wanted to see her other works! Now it is nostalgic to recall the visit to the small gallery at her house. This work, although glass, includes a soft warm ball of wool and a cute black cat. (Y.H)
When I saw this work, I was reminded once again of the beauty of glass. Matt and gloss are cleverly used and the moment after rain is vividly expressed. The motif of reptilia is also rare, the charming lizard is also beautiful. (TK)
I like the view of the world in this work. It sublimates the mixture of transparency and opacity of glass into a literary or metaphysical aroma. In addition, the work’s combination of fresh deep blue and translucent white, combined with the rhythmically continuous form of clouds and sheep, creates a sense of flight. It is a work that lifts me with cheer. (HH)
This work is a scene of puffer fish gathering to breed on the night of a full moon. It is a highly compact work that makes you feel the powerful vitality of life. The mystery of the sea is depicted superbly. It is also a work that includes Aya’s feelings for when she moved away from the seaside town she had lived in for many many years. (TH)
A seagull is soaring comfortably in the sky while a ship can be seen moving through the ocean below. The lid is opened not for the purpose of putting something inside, but to reveal a scene within. This is an excellent work. Within the small creation of less than 10 cm, there is enormous perspective. It is a work of baffling scale. (KH)
This work depicts the feeling of excitement and longing to visit a foreign country. It is like the wonderful fragrance of stacked spices drifting over in repeated waves. I feel the camels, delicately crafted, are the “spices” that bring out the beauty of the container’s lid. The various forms and colors of the spices produce pleasant rhythms. I think the work is that of an adult with a sparkling sense of creation. (WH)
