When I see spices, my heart is joyful. It is a joy perhaps similar to that felt when I was a child collecting treasures of nuts, pebbles, beads, and ohajiki*. For me, curry brings to mind mysterious secrets. Nuts, seeds, roots, and peel: boiling these in a pot conjured the classic image of a witch when I was a child. Now when I make curry, I feel I am using magic. When I made this work, I thought about the history of curry, carried to us via many people.
