Explanation of work(SHISUI)
The Yōkai paintings, which have no description other than their names, arouse both the desire and the imagination to arrange them in order to make them into sculptures. This may be the prototype for VABO-CHAN, the volleyball mascot character.
1970: Born in Hokkaido.
1990: Graduated from Sapporo Dental College (Sapporo Shika Gakuin Senmon Gakkou).
2010: Begins carving netsuke.
2011: Becomes active as a netsuke artist.
Shisui values the sense and perception first developed from his interest in original model making. He studied netsuke by himself through the Internet. His specialty is carving netsuke from the antlers of an indigenous Hokkaido deer. Previously, it had generally not been considered as material for netsuke carving. The current exhibition is inspired from his love of Yōkai. A mad set up of one’s own creation is marvelous.
