Bishū SAITO Profile

1943: Born in Tokyo into a family line of ivory carvers.
1962: Studied under his father Shosai SAITO.
Bishu was one of the founders of the contemporary netsuke movement, the genre now called Contemporary Netsuke. He was greatly influenced by both Eastern and Western art, being born and raised in a family of craftsmen while spending his youth in the museums of Ueno. Bishu strives to ensure that netsuke loses none of the modeling qualities of large sculpture. In his work, the beautiful modeling and large serpentine curves leave a strong impression with viewers.
